Detergents for Laboratory, Pharmaceutical & Manufacturing Environments
Glassware Detergents, Cage Washing Detergents and More
Choosing the right cleanroom, manufacturing, or lab detergent for your cleaning protocol helps simplify validation. That’s why STERIS offers a large portfolio of application-specific life sciences detergents. Our pharmaceutical, glassware washing, and cage washing detergents are available in a wide range of alkaline, acidic, neutral and specialty formulas. The detergents efficiently remove a wide spectrum of soils found in manufacturing processes.
Cage Washing Detergents
Cage-Klenz® research laboratory detergents remove hard water scale, urine scale, animal fats, oily proteinaceous soils, metal oxides and organic residues. They’re available in alkaline and acidic formulas for many animal cage materials, including metals, plastics and glass.
Glassware Washing Detergents
LabKlenz® and Glass-Klenz® detergents remove particulate and scale as well as other organic and inorganic residues from laboratory glassware. Mild- to high-alkaline formulas are available in addition to phosphoric acid, citric acid and chelate-based detergents.

Types of Life Sciences Detergent Formulas
STERIS offers cleanroom, manufacturing and lab detergents in a wide range of alkaline, acidic, neutral and specialty formulas. The process cleaners are complex formulations with multiple cleaning mechanisms, including solvency, solubilization, emulsification, wetting, chelation, dispersion, hydrolysis, and oxidation. The descriptions below outline common applications the basic formulas are used for in controlled environments, such as pharmaceutical and biotech manufacturing, research and testing as well as laboratory cleaning.
Alkaline Detergents – Used for the majority of cleaning applications due to their ability to remove a wide range of organic soils using alkaline hydrolysis.
Acid Detergents – Commonly used for the removal of inorganic residues and salts. Additionally, they are widely used for rouge removal and passivation of stainless steel equipment found in pharmaceutical process equipment trains.
Neutral Detergents – Since they have a mild pH and enhanced compatibility, these detergents are often used in manual cleaning applications or with sensitive substrates.
Specialty Chemistries – Formulated for life sciences applications which respond to other cleaning mechanisms (such as oxidation) or require unique characteristics (like heavy foam).
Selecting the Right Detergent
Simplify detergent selection by consulting with our highly qualified team of chemists, microbiologists and engineers.
Through our Process And Cleaner Evaluation (PACE®) program, you can receive assistance determining the right detergent and application conditions for validated cleaning.
After a PACE evaluation is completed, STERIS recommends a cleaning protocol by defining parameters based on chemical type, concentration, cleaning time, temperature, cleaning method and water quality.
The PACE program is an essential first step for selecting the right life sciences detergent.
